Overall, however, Myers remains much less valued than he should be. Apart from The ‘Clio’, his books are not the sort that have obvious and immediate attractions. Myers was very concerned to convey his ideas ‘by implication and inference’ rather than blatantly, and admitted that his work could be seen as ‘a compromise between philosophy and fiction . . . foredoomed from the start to great defects.’ His work demands readers who are prepared to spend time becoming accustomed to its fine qualities, which include fresh, precise description, fully-realised and attractively human characters, and the ability to explore deep concerns with delicacy and subtlety. Though he has never attracted anything quite so strong as a cult following, it is likely that there will always be a steady flow of new readers rediscovering L.H. Myers and his quiet masterpieces.
